I think my exact words were,
"Have you ever seen anything more beautiful?"
as I showed my sister her infant son
sleeping in my arms.
I spoke them softly and slowly,
and she seemed perfectly happy
when she leaned forward
to agree with me.
He was three months old then
I think.
And I honestly
did think
at that moment that there never was
a thing more lovely than him.
I still don't.
But now I know why.
He is beautiful
because he is my
first sister's
first baby
and I am holding him.
